Roller Derby, Obama, and other Delights
Last night we went to The Rose City Rollers, We watched the Heartless Heathers annihilate the Nor-Cal Roller Girls (from Chico CA). We also saw a more evenly matched pairing with the High Rollers vs. Guns n Rollers. The teams were all women. I'm guessing they were working with assumed names. It was great. We were there from about five to about 8, because we snuck out at half-time, in part becuase three hours was enough, in part because it was very loud (loud PA in a large metal barn), and by half time we felt we'd had the full experience.
To some degree we were like when strangers to the SCA come and see a big tournament. Clearly there were boyfriends and girlfriends and other fans, supporters, and other rollermaidens not in tonight's action in the stands. About 1000 people were in the stands! We watched as Vominatrix and Viagrrra Falls, and their teammates racked up the points in a vigorous and mildly physical sport. It was much more ruley than the movie Rollerball's game. Some of the costumes were very eye-catching, including shredding fishnet stockings or other features that draw the eye. Mostly he garb as not sexy so much as protective, and evocative of the decadent era. One that did catch my eye (every time she was skating away from me) was Candy Warhole, who wore a fishnet cat suit and over it had her Green High Rollers T-shirt, and a pair of white shorts with a small circle around a red maple leaf logo over her butthole.
This was a very happy looking gathering. I could see a few people I know embracing this with enthusiasm, and really enjoying it. If she weren't already spread very thin, I can imagine
ripresa really loving being a rollergirl for a year or two.
svava, Anne of Framlingham, and
dervishspin might also fit in in a way that fosters joy and personal growth. I can also imagine Piper finding it fun (but you must be 18).
Afterward we went to a nice German Restaurant, where I had a nice Bavarian Salmon with Horseradish sauce and Schnitzel (and spinach).
Two nights ago, I was out on their porch looking at the stars, and Arcturus looked brighter than it should. There's nothing in the news about this, so I'm guessing it was a trick of the moonlight.
Today, Dennis and I are RSVP'd to go see an outdoor Obama Rally a little over a mile from the hotel. It should be fun. BTW, I saw John McCain on SNL last night. He was pretty funny, and (as usual) self deprecating. More about the Obama rally tonight.
